Scottish Slate

What is Scottish Slate?

Scottish slate has been used on roofs across Scotland for generations, and people still trust it for a reason. It’s a solid, reliable material that handles our weather without a fuss, everything from rain to frost to high winds. Because it was originally hand-cut from local quarries, the pieces aren’t uniform. You get differences in sizes, thickness and colour, and that’s exactly what gives older roofs their charm. No two roofs look the same and that’s part of the appeal.

Challenges

Working with Scottish slate isn’t easy, and that’s exactly why you need roofers who know what they’re doing. Every piece of slate is different and nothing comes in tidy, matching batches. You’re dealing with hundreds of individual pieces that all need sorted, measured and lined up so the roof sits right. It’s nothing like modern tiles where you can grab a box and crack on, slate work is slow and fiddly, and there’s no shortcut.

Slate weighs a fair bit, so handling it takes care and experience. You can’t rush it and getting a neat, watertight finish takes time, patience and proper skill. That’s why Scottish slate work costs more and takes longer. It’s a specialist job, and only roofers who’ve worked with it for years can get it looking right and lasting the way it should.

The finish you get with slate is second to none, and there’s no other material that gives you the durability or traditional look of proper Scottish slate.

How We Work With Scottish Slate

We’ve been working with Scottish slate for years, so we know how to handle it properly. We take a careful, traditional approach when working with the slate. It can’t be cut the way modern tiles can, it’s shaped by hand, chipped and trimmed until it fits the line of the roof properly.

Once we’re on the roof, every slate gets measured before being fixed securely so it sits tight and sheds water the way it should. We carefully select the slates to match the existing roof so the finish looks consistent and keeps its original character.
It’s steady, skilled work, but when it’s done right, you’re left with a roof that looks traditional, sits neat and handles the Scottish elements without a fuss.

Recent Project: Stirling

We recently completed a Scottish slate restoration project in Stirling, using reclaimed slate to preserve the building’s traditional appearance while providing long-lasting protection.
